JOHN BROWN HOUSE
The John Brown House, built between 1796-1802, is one of the most significant projects I’ve worked on at The Brown Homestead. Since early 2022, I’ve been deeply involved in the interior restoration and rehabilitation of this historic building. The work has focused on preserving and revealing the home’s original architectural features, while also addressing its modern-day needs.
The first floor, including the dining room, parlour, front hall, and summer kitchen, has been carefully restored, with a focus on maintaining the building's historical integrity while making it suitable for contemporary use. Currently, my team and I are working on restoring the second-floor ballroom, a space that holds great historical value. This restoration process involves uncovering and preserving layers of original wallpaper, rebuilding key architectural elements like partition and entrance walls, and using traditional methods to ensure the house’s lasting heritage value.
The John Brown House project is a testament to the importance of adaptive reuse and meticulous restoration in preserving the stories and craftsmanship of the past.
